Washington - The United States has warned Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that blocking the strategic Strait of Hormuz was a 'red line,' and would provoke a response, The New York Times reported on Friday, citing US officials.
Officials in the administration of President Barack Obama declined to describe the secret channel of communication used to deliver the message, and whether Iran had responded, the report said.

LEAD: US warns Iran's Khamenei over threat to block key oil route - Monsters and Critics

This is bigger then the normal escalation, they don't do this very often.

A lot of tensions with Iran. Iran having scientists killed, Iran killing Americans, Proof they have helped the terrorists in Iraq, shutting down their banks, hurting their oil exports, etc.

If you know about it, it isn't a secret.

People used to say this about Venezuela and even Cuba at times when Bush came into office back in 2000. Also the pre-nuke North Korea.

Iran get's 60% of their income from oil exports, they are NOT closing the straight.

War between them and us would screw BOTH our economies which are delicate. This fight is going to continue to occur in the backroom coldwar style instead of hot.

Basically, we've been at war with Iran for 3+ years already.

I do not see why we should be having any conflict with Iran. If our Forever War policy requires a new enemy why do we not strike Pakistan or Saudi Arabia? If we restricted our wars to countries that are actually damaging us I suggest the Invasion of Israel should be considered. Maybe we should invade Canada so we would be able to steal their oil instead of buying it? At least Canada is closer.

A "secret" warning that everyone seems to know about. Sure...why not?
