So, a farmer has grown her crops for generations. She refuses to buy into the Monsanto GMOs. All around her, fellow farmers have accepted the fallacy that GMOs are better, tastier and cheaper.
Last year, her crops were tested and found to be genetically identical to those of her neighbors and Monsanto.
Monsanto now sues her for copyright enfringement and asks the courts for monetary relief and says she is now liable for royalty payments, even though she has never signed with Monsanto, purchased any products from Monsanto, or WANTED Monsanto products.

THIS is happening around the world as Monsanto has been able to convince various courts they deserve patent protection even when the cross contamination is completely unwanted by those who Monsanto is suing for compensation.

UPDATE FROM LANDMARK LAWSUIT AGAINST MONSANTO ---

The lawsuit seeks to invalidate Monsanto's patents on genetically modified (GMO) seeds and to prohibit the company from suing those whose crops become genetically contaminated because they drift through the air.

Monsanto has created a culture of fear in the rural community by aggressively pursuing lawsuits against farmers for "genetic trespassing."

There is a difference in hybirdzing and genetically modifiying. Gardening tips website has a pretty good essay on the GM tomato.

Many people confuse genetic altering with hybrids. The production of a hybrid is different from genetic engineering. Hybrids have been around for many years and are nothing more than cross-pollinating different species to produce one that has specific traits.

Despite the protests, cross breeding is a form a genetic manipulation.

Delicious and withe reduced vitimins, our tomatoes are becoing just about worthless..

From TOMATOLAND:

Tomatoes are picked hard and green and artificially gassed until their skins acquire a marketable hue. Modern plant breeding has tripled yields, but produces fruits with a fraction of the calcium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C, and fourteen tiimes as much sodium as the tomatoes our parents enjoyed. The relentless drive for low costs has fostered a thriving modern-day slave trade in the United States.

That's been true for 40-50 years and unrelated to GMO. We have always grown tomatoes because they taste so much better when vine ripened.

The more we know, the better we can make rational decisons--

Last week the Environmental Protection Agency released their long-awaited health report on dioxin, a class of industrial pollutants of Agent Orange infamy. Dubbed “the most toxic compound synthesized by man,” dioxin is considered a known human carcinogen, and may contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, endometriosis, early menopause, reduced testosterone and thyroid hormones, altered metabolism and immune responses, and skin, tooth, and nail abnormalities. Exposure during pregnancy can result in altered thyroid, brain, immune system, and reproductive organ development.

Agreed, hybridization (intentionally cross-breeding different varieties of the same species to achieve desired results) is a form of natural genetic manipulation. As is selective breeding (saving only the seeds from plants, or offspring from livestock) to achieve desired traits. And any other form of naturally occurring adaptive mutation. Unfortunately many hybrids/mutations are unstable, either being sterile or not breeding true (i.e. reverting back to parent). It takes many generations of careful selection and breeding to stabilize a hybrid/mutant into a consistent cultivar.

However, there is a world of difference between natural hybridization between two genetically similar cultivars or species (like mules); and artificially tampering with the DNA at the molecular level in a laboratory to combine genetic material from two entirely different species (sometimes even entirely different kingdoms). Despite the pro-GMO protests, there is a distinction.

Unlike hybrids, (most) GMOs cannot occur naturally... at least not the last time I checked. But I haven't seen any frogs out humping my tomatoes and successfully reproducing Kermit-mater offspring yet

have you seen the [all natural] photosynthetic sea slug?

Quote:
Solar-powered sea slug harnesses stolen plant genes - life - 24 November 2008 - New Scientist
They then turned their attention to the sea slug's own DNA and found one of the vital algal genes was present. Its sequence was identical to the algal version, indicating that the slug had probably stolen the gene from its food.
btw, where did this frog+tomato legend originate? i've already seen it talked about here a half dozen times
