I once cruised on that ship, the M V Oceanus. It went down off the coast of South Africa. It was captained and crewed by the same Greek sailors as the time I was aboard.

The crew did indeed abandon ship, stranding ALL the passengers aboard. The entertainment staff contacted the SA Coast Guard and helped co-ordinate the rescue. Miraculously no one died, although it was touch and go near the end.

Based on my impression of the crew when I sailed with then, I was not surprised by their conduct.

Gee and I hope the media continue the relentless comparisons to the Titanic.

When this first happened there were folks interviewed from the ship that men were pushing woman and children outta the way to get to the life boats as chaos swept over. I guess that's a harsh lesson learned for the feminists.

Why do you bother..
What's that lesson? That men are wimps? Probably why you have seen a rise in feminism...

Why aren't we making fun of this folks? Seems Americans frequently lampoon all things French but we rarely critisize Italy. hmmm

But this foolish captain's behavior reminds me of a growing trend... being overly social on the job. Back to America, it seems to be acceptable nowadays to be blatantly social on the job. From single moms parenting their kids while they work, to hipsters spending 10 hrs a week on social media, to admin staffers wearing headsets to chat with friends all day, to top employees critisized for being anti-social if they don't spend much time socializing.

Just more, decline-of-Western-civilization stuff I reckon...
Meh....not really.

There is no decline. Things are the same as they've always been. This thing in Italy has no application to any wider implications that you're trying to make.

The lesson is every man for himself. Or woman. That's how you want it you got it.

I direct you to " The Love Craft" by SCTV 1978. Man that show was comedy gold.

There was a book on the shleves at the local Wal Mart, about the fall of America. I don't remember the authour but it showed America being represented by a corpse in a morgue with a toe tag on its foot. Anyway, in a chapter the author examined the decay of modern society by comparing the Titanic disaster and modern shipwrecks. He pointed out the factual errors of the movie "Titanic" regarding the crew and male passengers grabbing lifeboats at the expense of women and children and then looked at the survival statistics today. Women and children do not fare well at all compared to 100 years ago. Of course we see that every day on the streets of America but it was eye opening looking at how those cruise ships and other ships can be death traps in any kind of emergency. The crew are the first ones to abandon ship and its then survival of the fittest.

Eh...i don't buy it.

I mean, this incident isn't even comparable to the Titanic anyway.

And again, things are no different today for women and children than they ever were.
