It's kind of a truism for people to declare 'I vote for the person, not the party.' You can almost see the self-awarded halo appearing over their heads as they say it.
I don't. I almost always vote for the party, not the person. In a few cases I have voted for Democrats, such as WA state auditor Brian Sonntag, who everybody here knows is a fiscal conservative and Democrat in name only. But I voted for my US rep Dave Reichert (R) even though I generally don't trust him. Why? I'm voting for the party, not the man. That's why I also will vote for Romney in Nov 2012 if he ends up as the nominee. In spite of his support for 'assault weapon bans' and green jobs.
As bad as the R's can be, the D's are worse. With W Bush we had $400 billion deficits. With Obama, $trillion+ deficits. While I'd like to see a Ron Paul in there eliminating whole federal departments, it's not likely to happen. Until it does, I'll take a Romney over an Obama every time.

Reminds me of what I often heard as a kid "do as you are told"

Why don't you pop over to our Elections forum more often?
The more of us who can attempt to get this into the heads of the Paulbots, the better.

Then you must be real proud. The Rs in the House are voting, probably in unison, against America right now.

And with Bill Clinton (D), we had a surplus. this makes your argument even stronger, because it uses reverse logic to undo a faulty premise. If we ignore things like the economy and near complete global financial collapse, it's a pretty air tight thing you just said there. I mean, look at it this way, if Clinton had to deal with what Obama has to deal with, he'd still have had a surplus, right? See. Situations make little difference. It's all about the D and R after the name.
Romney is a quack. All the Republican nominees are quacks. Can't they find SOmEONE who is not a quack so I can vote for them instead of Obama?
That would be awesome.
So would you vote for a head of lettuce if it was put forward by your party?
Does it really seem sane or even remotely rational to not care about the person representing you?
It's a general guide, not an absolute rule. If the R candidate is really awful, and the D is not half-bad, I will vote for the D. But that is almost never the case.
Laws and policies tend to be enacted by parties, not by people. Doesn't it then make sense to vote for party over person?
I'm a patriot. I vote for Democratic Party candidates.
