I was just listening to an online radio program and they were quoting this provision from the German constitution:
"Property obliges. Its use shall serve the common good as well."
I first heard it many years ago, but never really thought much about it. Like most people Germans think, this or that is legally mine, for instance because I bought it, so I can do with it what I want.
It seems an interesting concept, though. I am not even sure what exactly they mean by obligation, or if there is a threshold below which property does not oblige (for instance my computer
). There don't seem to be any explanations, examples or whatever.
Are there similar provisions in the US constitution?
