It's all about the money. The same buffoon that co-wrote one of the worst pieces of garbage to counter the exact opposite stance he had previously taken (Dodd-Frank) is now the lobbyist for the movie industry... More stunning proof that politicians should be banned for lobbying.
In February 2011, despite "repeatedly and categorically insisting that he would not work as a lobbyist Dodd was identified by the NY Times as the likely replacement for Dan Glickman as chairman and chief lobbyist for the MPAA. The hiring was officially announced on March 1, 2011,with his salary estimated at $1.5 million per year.
Apparantly Dodd should have said "
repeatedly and categorically insisting that he would not work as a lobbyist, unless of course, you offer me $1.5M per year". Politicians and their back-room dealings is what will kill all freedom if they can help it.
One thing I can tell you is these laws will not stop pirates, much like disarming citizens doesn't stop violent crime. In fact, I'd bet that the losses from piracy wouldn't add to their bottom line, as anyone that would have stolen a copy won't be paying for a copy anyway.
P.S. Microsoft wouldn't have had Windows 95 in 95 without the hackers who fiddled and played with the thing until it worked. Hackers were Microsofts R&D back in the 90's, and they leaked Chicago to us for that purpose.

Imagine the outrage if this kind of government censorship happened on Bush's watch.

Instead of piracy, he went after those bad poker players, and the dismantling of "safe harbor" began on his watch. Let's not forget that this bill is co-sponsored by Ds and Rs, and that McCain is championing end arounds to Habeas Corpus (due process). Bush wouldn't have batted an eye if this had come before him. Obama and he are pretty much the same animal really.
