Yeah, I don't bother when the emotional bs comes out that because the person is a veteran that it's a more heinous crime than it would be for any other person.
Vets are NOT any more special than any other person.

Vets are seen in a different light when there is a war going on, and they are dying on the battlefield. Sorry if this bothers you or does not sit well with your prejudices and ideology.

So some guy a few years older than me who managed to find his way out of serving in Nam wouldn't deserve a news article or notice?
I guarantee you that we haven't heard the whole story yet. We will find out later that the victim said some nasty things to the kids as he walked by them. Probably called them the n word or told them to go back to Africa and they retaliated.

Why some folks have to turn everything into a racial issue is beyond me. People are people, punk teenagers are punks, not because of their race, but because that is a time when they are becoming adults in society, and have not yet understood what that means, or how to control their raging hormones and changes going on within themselves.
No race of teens has a market on good behavior, so to drag race into this is flat out ignorant.

You might want to look at the demographics of the US as a whole and then cross reference the FBI statistics with them. Here, I'll do it for you:
-Blacks make up 12% of the population but commit more than 18% of the hate crimes in the US.
-Whites make up 65% of the US population but commit only 58% of the hate crimes in the US.
It might help if they would charge blacks with hate crimes when its obvious they attacked white folks because of race. They charge whites with hate crime whenever they attack or get into a fight with a non white person because the system is corrupt and racist.

When we are in a war, then yes, a little more emphasis is attributed to that status as a vet. That is just how we are, whatever is prominent in the current spotlight of the nation gets a little more attention. Remember during the Clinton years after Oklahoma city bombing, and Ruby Ridge, a lot more attention was focused on white militia groups and fringe religious sects.
So you are just going to have to live with the thought that military veterans have a warm spot is the hearts of Americans. I guess you'll just have to hope for a few more peeing episodes to tarnish the vets, before your happy again.
