How do you teach slavery in school without being insensitive?

Quote:
As Black History Month approaches, the question of how to teach black history in 2012 is still a point of contention.

"It is important for us to not only give African-American students, but all students, a sense of the agency of African-Americans," said Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Wayne State University in Detroit. "Yes, African-Americans were enslaved. We were subjected to second-class citizenship, Jim Crow, and de jure segregation.
Perhaps only qualified teachers should even broach the subject?

You say that long ago there used to be slavery in America and we did the right thing to get rid of it.

That today Africa still has tribes selling slaves to places like Saudi Arabia and that we home all slavery ends around the world soon.

Children are not only very resilient but they are far, more insightful and clear-sighted than we give them credit for. You simply tell them in language that doesn't overstep their level of vocabularly. I see nothing to worry about in this scenario.

I would worry less about being "offensive" and more about being "accurate". Just teach the students the truth.

Tell the truth. Start by NOT changing the history books. That goes for WWII as well.

Then why does slavery exist in much of Africa? Female genital mutilation? Mistreatment of albinos?

Why do meth labs and child molesters populate America?

No country is perfect, y'know.
