Islam itself is a beautiful belief set that is compatible with modern life. The problem is this ultra conservative Wahhabi islam that has been around for the last 200 years.
But somehow many Christians have managed to, how shall I put it, abstract and water down their religion. In Islam there is a lot more scaring and punishing. Some people say, well, Islam is young compared with Christianity, so give Islam a couple of centuries to catch up. I am not so sure about that. In most places including the West Christianity is not really older than Islam is in Islamic countries. In Europe for instance Christianity was not really common before the early middle ages. Later there were extreme, very intolerant periods, similar to Islam. But people somehow got over that within a few centuries. With Islam I see no maturing process or anything like that, frankly.

No, the problem is that the religion has violent verses, and it allows the conservatives and the fundamentalists to follow those teachings as valid.
You can't say that your holy book is holy, and the word of God, and then say "Yeah but this part we shouldn't follow".
If your assertion is that your holy book was written by God, or written by a man told to do so by God, then you can't claim that its a beautiful belief and denigrate those that follow things to the letter.
And there in lies the problem with all three of the religions based on Abraham. They are all bloody, they all promote violence, and they all can be used to excuse behavior not compliant with human society in the 21st century.
I'm not saying there aren't good lessons in all of the holy books. There are, but then to say that all of the words are from God, well, that leads to problems.
Muhammad may have started off a peaceful man, but he ended as a violent revolutionary. Christ may have been a peaceful man, but his disciples and later followers were violent revolutionaries. Judaism is a very peaceful religion, but even they have been violent revolutionaries.
Abrahams religions should never be followed to the letter, ever. And for that, they are not "beautiful belief sets"
you could ask the same about christianity when you think about it...esp. the kind of christianity the religious right follows...
Right on, stuff the religious right does ,like stoning people to death for changing thier religon, or beingraped. All those christians that kill thier daughters for "honor".
Christians should practice all the same "tolarance. love ,patience and
understanding" that muslims do with gays and cheating wives. Shira law
is all about being able to forgive, huh ?
It was said that Abraham couldn't kill his son, which is wrong, he was willing and more then ready to do so.
Then when I called him out on it, you said "No you should read the bible, you don't understand it"
Was Abraham, at Gods request, willing to kill his child? What lesson does this teach us? That if you are obedient to God that great rewards will be paid to you? Yes, thats what it means. But then when the bible goes onto say that if your wife, son, or whoever tries to get you to convert to another God, its ok to kill them, well, there in lies the problem...
As I said I don't follow the Old Testament, it's really of no use to me. The New Testament are the words of Jesus, that's what Christians believe.
But you used to do exactly that just a few centuries ago, and now you sit there smartly smug as though your perfect.
Historically...

No, I didn't!! I'm not perfect, I have sinned many times I'm a child of the 70's. Never claimed perfection..........as you sit and judge others you know nothing about you seem to be a smug one yourself
First, I'm an athiest, so your little rant and obsession are misdirected. I regard most religion as a bit silly. But in most cases it's basically harmless, and perhaps even a force for good. Islam may be an exception to that. I have usually assumed that most violent actions committed in the name if Islam are a tiny number of derranged individuals, that use the Koran as their justification. But this case, with over 10,000 followers calling for murder in it's name, makes me wonder if it's not representative if it's not the region as a whole that is the issue.
Point two, you're discussing things that happened centuries ago. The OP was pretty straigntforward...is Islam compatable with the 21st century? You know, the current one? Please try to keep up
Or are you trying to justify tha barbaritry of Islam in this generation as similar to Christianity of upwards of a millenia ago? Are you implying that it will be another few centuries before people enslaved by Islam will respect life, freedom and those that don't share their own particular superstitions? I sincerely hope that isn't the case.
At least you level headed and realize these things are not the Christians of today. Not to stay Christianity doesn't need improving and I question many things of how Christians act, but it's hard for one person to change the world.
Thanks for being more open minded than most on CD!!
