How dare corporations make beer all the time knowing that some of these indians like to drink it. And if they don't get enough from the evil coroporations they will sue the drugstores for selling it to em. Only in the insane world we live in of it's everybody elses fault is this possible.
An American Indian tribe sued some of the world’s largest beer makers Thursday, claiming they knowingly contributed to devastating alcohol-related problems on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota said it is demanding $500 million in damages for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation, which encompasses some of the nation’s most impoverished counties.

Complete breakdown of personal responsibility. In a nearby nation wonder who is to blame for the outrageous rape rates....perhaps doctors who didn't castrate young boys?

The native Americans had plenty of their own fermented beverages. If they wanted to try some sort of ethnic exposure to foreign substances, it would have to be distilled alcohol. Beer? Sorry, not even dice on this one.

The suit, filed by the Oglala Sioux tribe, alleges the brewers are "engaged in a common enterprise focused on assisting and participating in the illegal importation of alcohol" onto the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the sale, possession and consumption of alcohol is illegal

Based on the limited information from the article it is highly unlikely to be successful. Beer in the USA is sold from the brewer to various distributors; therefore, a brewer has no control on where the product goes after it arrives at the distributors.

Is there a legal basis for the Ogalala to go after the distrubutors? Maybe. However, since the reservation is a sovereign nation they also can control commerce allowed within the reservation. They have their own law enforcement to enforce the laws on the reservation and for something which arises to the level of federal violation the BIA agents can get BATFE involved.

My guess is that this is a hunt for deep pockets in an attempt to fund programs to address alcoholism/chemical dependency on what is possibly the poorest Reservation in the lower 48, nothing more.

The lawsuit says Whiteclay has a population of fewer than 12 people and "no publicly accessible place to lawfully consume alcohol." Yet each day, the four retailers in town sell more than 13,000 cans of beer.

Much of that beer ends up on the reservation, according to the lawsuit, where it has "devastating effects" on the tribe.
The pockets of the four retailers was likely not large enough to suit the suing Sioux tribe.

If you ever need a reason to feel grateful for what you have look no further than the poverty existing on a significant percentage of the Reservations. It is another federal program which has completely failed and has pigeon holed people into generational poverty like none other in our nation's history. Shameful.

The last thing you should ever provide to the Indians is alcohol.

Alcohol in this country is legal. What people choose to do with it is their business and theirs alone (drinking and driving notwithstanding).

The Reservations are sovereign nations. They have their own laws and their own law enforcement. This one has chosen to ban the possession of alcohol on its Reservation; and, for good reason. They will have to use their limited law enforcement resources to enforce their laws and stop the smuggling. onto the Res. .
