Most get more than they paid for one reason-seniors vote. Disproportinate power to keep the gravy train going. Payments should stop once the worker has gotten back what he put in, plus interest. If you want to continue it, we should have a SS WElfare program at that point, because from than on OTHERS are subsidizing you.

Will you be donating your SS and foregoing Medicare in lieu of private health insurance?
I'm surprised that this thread isn't generating a lot of discussion, since it exposes the welfare recipients in the article as being right wing hypocrites.
This is the most disturbing part in the article:
Quote:
One of the oldest criticisms of democracy is that the people will inevitably drain the treasury by demanding more spending than taxes. The theory is that citizens who get more than they pay for will vote for politicians who promise to increase spending.
But Dean P. Lacy, a professor of political science at Dartmouth College, has identified a twist on that theme in American politics over the last generation. Support for Republican candidates, who generally promise to cut government spending, has increased since 1980 in states where the federal government spends more than it collects. The greater the dependence, the greater the support for Republican candidates.
Conversely, states that pay more in taxes than they receive in benefits tend to support Democratic candidates. And Professor Lacy found that the pattern could not be explained by demographics or social issues.
SLCPUNK, I'm only contributing financially to pols who will reduce SS and Medicare Government costs for my and prior generations. I do not share your interest in the genocide , economically, of younger generations.
If you want to find the cause of this misery, both the lack of jobs, the decrease in salaries, the decrease in tax revenues, you can put it at the feet of all those administrations that allowed jobs to slip away out of the country to poorer nations. What we are losing, they are gaining. There must be a lot of happy people over there, across the oceans.
goldengrain, If we do the right things, we can compete. 40' containers cost several thousand to import, and the Asians do not source material cheaper than us, somethimes they pay MORE. So labor is the only thing we need to compete on, and bear in mind, its our labor costs vs their labor cost plus the 40' containers' shipping costs.
And if the savings is not huge, just in time inventory needs tilts the decision towards making it here.

That's essentially what happens. This program has been going on for decades. Workers pay the benefits of those retired. It has a small long term deficit that could be corrected by raising taxes slightly. Right winger refuse to let this happen because they want to create lack of trust in the program and destroy it.
padcrasher, Minor changes will not fix SS, as demographics now, are what will cause its demise. I'd like to see SS have to balance intake and output ANNUALLY. That would eliminate sticking it to future generations. If taxes are to be raised, it should not be the cap raised, but solely raise the EMPLOYEE rate. That way, if one supports your love of the program, one can demonstrate it..personally.
I'd also like to see a change where rate hikes had to be approved via national referendum.

Certainly, the problem is labor costs. Third world nations do not have to worry about worker safety or environmental protections or health care. If an employee gets pregnant or is injured on the job or does not want to work twelve hour days for meager pay, they're just canned. Of coarse, it's labor. We would not tolerate their working conditions for Americans. Have you heard of all the suicides in Chinese plants? Their solution was to put nets around the buildings so that workers could not end it all by jumping off roof tops or from high windows. Can you imagine what we are competing with when their workers are so desperate that they want to end it all? We do not work farm animals so hard.

Sure you want to opt out with your money. That's because you don't understand how the program works. If you opt out with your money who pays the current retirees benefits?
