Who in their right mind wants to hang out in a country, where for instance in 2010, more than 15,000 people were murdered/beheaded/burned whatever.
Mexico's murder rate per capita is about 4.5 times higher than the US rate, but it's by no means the most dangerous country out there, nor the most dangerous nation that attracts large numbers of tourists.

Anyhow, Mexico's tourist numbers have actually been rising steadily, as visitors from newly-wealthier countries like Brazil and China augment those from the US (Mexico's traditional biggest source of tourists).

At ALL......
I am with you ;I would never go agian and that is advise from mexican friends who have family there. Murder is not the only crime problem growing qucikly.

Cabo seems safe, but Puerto Vallarta and some other larger Mexican cities should be avoided. If you want a large city with comfortable weather, go to San Diego instead. That helps our economy, too.

The state Department is charged with keeping track of Americans who die abroad not of natural causes. The record keeping requirements are minimal, as they are not tasked with investigating every cause.

I went to Cozumel and that was good enough for me. I've lived in CA my whole life and never wanted to cross the southern border.

We spent three weeks in San Miguel De Allende and Puerto Vallarta this year and never felt threatened once.
It's a wonderful country with very friendly people.
Not all that keen on the cuisine though ...
