Should an employee of a Jewish organization be denied coverage for a heart valve replacement because it isn't kosher? Or should a Jewish hospital refuse to do this same poceedure?

Yawn.

The government should not mandate that any religious/faith based organization be forced to provide insurance coverage or services which are contrary to its religious teachings.

Sorry, maybe I should have made the point that many valve replacements use pig valves. Therefore they aren't kosher and against Jewish kosher laws.

Can't a jewish butcher just chop the pig up and that makes it kosher??? I'm not up to date on the exact rules myself.

Sorry, pigs aren't ever considered kosher.

Hillel Gray, scholar of religion & ethics

No. Some animals are not kosher because of how they are killed (e.g., a sheep torn by a predator). Some animals are not kosher because of their health (e.g., diseased). But pigs are among the animals that are not kosher because of their intrinsic characteristics as a species, according to Biblical law. Hence pigs are not kosher in any form or under any circumstances.

There are also medicines that aren't considered kosher. There are also religious groups who are against blood transfusions. I guess that medical coverage limitations can be a very slippery slope for those employed by certain faiths. And, what faiths are going to be accepted. Wiccans? What is going to be considered as a religion? I might not believe in anything but prayer for all medical conditions; I bet that will become very popular with many employers.

Tricky area. Clearly a Jew can't eat swine. But use? Can a Jew play football?

Many Rabbis will agree that medical neccessity trumps kosher. You save the life.

But it is not universal.
