Thanks again, geeoro. My very dear ex-manager took a job in London to open up an office for a large health insurer based here in the US. I wonder how that is faring, considering this, and why even the UK was a spot they thought about for the global expansion. I would take your suggestions, and actually possibly touch base with him and get his thoughts on the matter.

Greatday - for some strange reason, I thought you were in the service. My FIL has retired to your area and is covered by Tricare. They seem to get a lot us civvies don't.

bibit- no system is perfect but it is great to know that no matter what your position in life that if you or your loved ones are sick they can get great healthcare. My wife is from the USA and if she hadn't come over to the UK she probably would be blind now due to Chataracts and they discovered a really nasty infected Gall Bladder that she has now had removed. She also has private health insurance in case we want her to be seen quickly and there is a waiting list on the NHS. Best of both worlds. (LOL)

Private Health care here can be very reasonable and maybe your ex manager deals with company health plans. He may even be breaking into health care here because it has a huge untapped market?

This Hospital is the Oldest in The uk. Henry the eighth signed a charter that this Hospital must never have private patients and be for all people. It is a NHS hospital - No one pays for treatment there.

You can see that by being a NHS hospital there are many ways of running these individual Hospitals thus they control themselves. This fear of Govt ruling the Hospital is not a option. NHS hospitals are funded by the govt. but there are many variations on how they are run. It is in fact less Controlled than a Private Hospital that is governed by the Insurance companies with profit it's main concern overaul.

Are these hospitals government owned? Or, are they privately owned and government funded?

Thanks.

But, it is in that answer where part of the problem lies with converting the United States to a Universal HI scheme.

A vast majority of Hospitals and Clinics are PRIVATELY owned. For a UHI to work, those facilities would, as they are in the UK, be bought out by the United States Government. Our laws - our constitution, strictly prohibits simply coming in and taking over any property or business without payment of compensation.

Over the last year or two, I have seen various estimates of that cost - a "start up" cost if you will - many estimates hover in the 90 to 100 TRILLION dollar mark / area. AND, that is before you open the doors for business.

Who will pay that startup cost?
