If you work the graveyard shift at a liquor store in South Central or some rough area, yeah, you have a greater risk of getting shot at. However most of us are never in that situation. Sorry to hear about your incident, but like I said, it's rare, not for you, but for MOST of us.

I'll take that even further. While visiting a man who was a Vietnam VET, the first thing he said when I walked in was..." get in here...shut up...get down...get down quick!" I asked him who he thought was out there after him? I was asking him this while doing what he said. He said.. "it's VC, their after me again!" He was having a flashback. I stayed down like he said to make him feel better. I know what he was going through, shall we say. Minutes later with nothing going on, I was beginning to think he lost it for a few. Not long after, a brick comes smashing through his living room window thrown by some gangbangers who had been threatening him in the past. Though his fear was a little off, and who was doing it to him...he was RIGHT about the presence of danger. Smart man!!

I'm in my mid 30s and I've never been in a serious car accident, chances are I never will. Would you suggest that I not wear a seat belt because my chances of needing one are very slim?

I assume you've been in a car accident, like many if not most drivers. I've been in several, as has many of my friends and relatives. One time I didn't wear one and nearly dislocated my shoulder.
I would be lying if I said that the important reason, much less the main reason, for owning a gun was for self-protection. The fact is I like guns, always have and always will.
If you are alive and reading this and have never fired a gun in self-defense (military service excluded) you've never needed a gun and it is highly likely that you never will. Which brings me to the topic. Even the most gun loving self-defense experts will tell you that your best weapon is your brain. Being aware of your surroundings, identify possible threats, using some common sense security will reduce the need for a gun along with such factors as age, race, drug and alcohol use. In the end of the day most of us don't need a gun.

I've had someone back into my truck in a parking lot and I once had a lady bump my rear bumper in stop and go traffic without causing any real damage.
Given that info would you suggest a person in my position not wear a seat belt given the slim chance of me ever needing one? Should a person like myself stop living in fear of a car accident and stop wearing a seat belt?
