"If you're charged with a nonviolent crime in one Alabama town, you might just have the chance to pray it all away. Starting this week, under a new program called Operation ROC (Restore Our Community), local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year."

"Those who choose to go to church...will have to check in with a pastor and the police department each week...Once you attend church every week for a year the case would be dismissed.Police Chief Mike Rowland said the measure is one that would help save money"

It's nice to see legitimate government action for once: bringing people to Jesus Christ.

Proselytizing from the bench. Nice.

I'd pay the fine. I love my Sundays too much.

Making criminals write a 300 page treatise in ethics would likely be a much more beneficial exercise, if the goal of such a program was to get them to get them to reflect deeply upon the moral significance of their actions. A few token preachings is not likely going to promote the necessary reasoning skills which is needed to foster a deeper understanding of the issues involved.

Man, you'd have to really hate church to choose jail over church. 1 hour Sunday compared to 24/7 in a cell?

That said, doesn't this kind of punch the whole "separation of church and state" in the face?

What if they were already attending church regularly at the time the crime was committed?

Lol.

Hmm...go to church or get raped by large men holding knives. Think I'll go to church, thank you.

The least religious countries have in general, the least crime.

If they really want to help these individuals they'd stop spreading fairy tales and teach them to use reason and critical thinking skills.

What if the criminal is a pedophile priest? Sending him to church is a treat
