Starting this week, under a new program called Operation ROC (Restore Our Community), local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year."

Making criminals write a 300 page treatise in ethics would likely be a much more beneficial exercise, if the goal of such a program was to get them to get them to reflect deeply upon the moral significance of their actions. A few token preachings is not likely going to promote the necessary reasoning skills which is needed to foster a deeper understanding of the issues involved.
