The legal system in the US is a joke. Regardless of whether the plaintiff's claims are legitimate the numbers of this settlement are absolutely ridiculous.
A jury in Sacramento federal court on Wednesday awarded more than $167 million to a former surgical physician's assistant at Mercy General Hospital on her claims of workplace harassment and retaliation that led to her wrongful termination.
The panel assessed Mercy and its parent, Catholic Healthcare West, $125 million in punitive damages as punishment for their "unlawful conduct," and $42.7 million as compensation for lost wages, mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, damage to reputation, and humiliation.
lots of unlawful terminations. in this case the person was rich and smart enough to fight it.
how many people i have known sacked 6 months b4 retirement for incompetence?

I am not familiar with the details of this case. However, just wanted to mention the consequences of such "verdicts". They changed the way our country works, does business, the cost of medical care, and is effecting (un)employment. It caused an unprecedented legal intervention in everyday life and provided lawyers their best time in history. There is additional price to those "settlements" which will be paid by future (and potential) employees, since employers take measures to defend themselves. Every time you apply for a job you feel it.
Think about that.
Wrongful death awards are in the thousands, there is something very fowl in this award. I hope it gets thrown out. The hospital must have tried to settle with this extortionist. Sounds like they are trying to put Catholic hospitals out of business, along with their insurance co's. You don't get to sue the gov't, so these lawsuits will be history with Obamacare.
