“This mandate is not really about condoms or generic versions of ‘the pill, which are available free or cheap in lots of places,” writes Schweizer.

“This is about brand-name birth control drugs and other devices that some consumers swear off because they are too expensive.”

Under Obamacare, that expense is zero. People will demand the brand-name drugs and Big Pharma will clean up.

That’s an unintended consequence that might well have been intended. “Obama’s financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry run deep,” he writes. “During the 2008 presidential campaign, he collected three times more in contributions from pharmaceutical manufacturers than John McCain.”

Of course that will push premiums up even further, with young people bearing a disproportionate part of the burden...

Do you think birth control's expensive now? Wait till it's free | NJ.com

So basically making contraception free makes it harder to control cost because by contraception being free it hides its true costs.

It is not free. It is covered by your insurance plan, just like most other medication prescribed by the doctor.

The reason healthcare costs have expanded is because some people get it for free, no payment for it, and others do have to pay for it. The idea behind a "mandate" is that EVERYONE will be paying for it, regardless of need, and that should stabilize costs.

I have not found one person who has said they would refuse going to the doctor, without insurance, if they were dying from painful bone cancer. Everyone uses the healthcare system, sooner or later.

Now, I don't like the mandate. I don't like the idea of the federal government mandating that I buy anything, even though I already buy mine. Its to much power, IMO. I think we should have a single payer system, for all life threatening, painful, and crippling problems. Let everyone pay for private insurance to cover anything else they do. But tax to pay for the first three.

Americans won't see people dying in the streets. We've had mandated care in this country since 1986, under Reagan.

The affordable healthcare act is simply trying to find a way to pay for Reagans mistake. As I said though, its a massive over reach of federal power.

It is free like anything else on your health insurance plan.

Who asked for free contraceptives?

Question 2: Why do we have 2-3 threads on this same topic today?

It wouldn't be free, but others have already pointed out that falsehood to you. But another answer to the question your thread poses--making contraceptives readily available would vastly reduce the number of abortions. Aren't those zygotes a big concern of the bible-thumpers and the GOP? This will save all those babies! Are you FOR murdering babies now??

Well, it's already paid for though people's premiums so it's not really free...just distributed cost over a larger number of people.

Also, the money spent for pregnancy and support of a child that is accidental is in far excess to a few bucks for birth control.

If people ***** and moan about paying assistance to others, why rant and rave about the significantly lower cost of preventing that?

Is it because people are having sex? Seriously, grow up. This isn't middle school anymore where people are terrified of their genitals.

Exactly. Question for supporters: Exactly HowTF is Obama's "free contraceptives" mandate a "compromise"?

Others are pointing this out. Are these authors misunderstansing this mandate?

Quote:

Under the new mandate, this price incentive disappears. Insurers will be required to pay for any and all oral contraceptives, without charging a co-pay, co-insurance, or a deductible. This "first dollar coverage" of oral contraception kills the incentive to shop based on price.

If history is any guide, this significant change will drive up the price of oral contraception.

No, just politicizing it, using a manufactured "issue".

Most health insurance providers already offer free contraception. My significant others was free. We didn't pay a dime for her IUD, no copay, no nothing. Hell if I had the time to get a vasectomy, that would be free, no copay. But we haven't decided if we don't want to have more children later, so we'll wait.

The problem came in when Catholic churches, which don't like contraception, provide non Catholic employees with insurance, that didn't cover it. They are actually a minority insurance carrier. Most of the insurance plans offered side deals, with other insurance companies that all but paid for it anyway.

We can debate whether its right or wrong for the government to mandate that you buy anything. But if you've already bought it, the government has had a long history of mandating that things are offered along with your purchase that you may or may not want to use. Like seat belts.
