Stop raising and eating animals. PAY people NOT to have kids. Go for the healthy plant based diet, and eliminate major diseases brought on by eating the wrong foods.
There are various causes of world poverty like:
1. Natural Disasters
2. Debt - Most LEDC's (Less Economically Developed Countries) must borrow money from banks of developed countries to begin their own development.
3. War
4. Unfair Trade - Developed countries set the prices and terms they will pay for LEDC products. To get more to pay off debt etc, cash crops (like tobacco, coffee & cotton) are planted instead of food crops.
5. Corruption - food & resources may not make it to those in most need.
6. HIV/AIDS
7. Lack of Education
What can we do, big or small steps, to improve conditions for those who struggle with hunger?
Nothing, nothing at all. The first thing we usually do is send in our military for "humanitarian" and "peacekeeping" missions. The next thing we do is take control of the land. The final outcome is major corporations end up raping the natural resources of said countries and the citizens are worse off.

Generally, the more educated, the less children.
IMO, this applies to developed countries as much as less developed countries.
It takes a lot to raise children, you never know until they're completely raised!
I'm leaning more & more vegetarian - not strict, but I'm liking meat less & less.
I know it's good for iron & protein, but there are other ways.
But to each his/her own.
Joebald,
I believe the heart of most problems, including poverty & hunger, is ignorance.
