The federal government will withdraw funding for a Texas program providing more than 100,000 poor women with birth control and other health services because Planned Parenthood clinics are not allowed to participate, a U.S. Health and Human Services spokeswoman said on Friday.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the decision in Houston on Friday, prompting a furious response from Texas Governor Rick Perry, who called it an "egregious federal overreach."
At the heart of the dispute between the administration of President Barack Obama and Texas is the divisive issue of abortion.
The Texas legislature last year voted to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood because the network of women's health clinics performs abortions. The federal government says that this violates rules of Medicaid, the health program for the poor.
Perry has said that they will look for money in the Texas budget to cover the Fed money and that poor women will still be able to get healthcare. Texas knew this was coming.
Guess it would have been nice if she called the Governor first and told him before announcing to the Press.
But then again, there is no love lost between Texas and the WH.
Obama is in Houston at a $38K/plate fundraiser. Wonder if he will have any comments.
BS, Perry and the cronies in the State legislature made the dare, and the Federal Gov't. took 'em up on it. Plain and simple. Actions and consequences. It's not like they didn't know, or this came out of left field. They were warned something like this could happen. And now it has.
In the end, it's the Republican's fault...as usual.
I guess there are NO lengths and depths this administration won't sink to in protecting their political allies.
Over 100,000 POOR WOMEN they are waging war against.
Good point, but my first law of politics is that whenever the poor are opposed by another interest group, the poor only lose.
Except...the poor would probably win in a hypothetical political conflict with sex offenders. (Although the ACLU would say sex offenders need a place to live too.)

If the Administration were so sure that Texas was violating Medicaid rules, why didn't they let the courts do the dirty work for them?
Or are Democrats waging war on poor women for political points?

Let's put the blame for this where it belongs (one guess)
The GOP (or whatever it is)- dominated Texas State government SLASHED funding for women's health centers by 2/3rds in a misguided effort to reduce money going to Planned Parenthood. In doing so, they made themselves ineligable for the federal funds:

Sounds to me like Perry is starting his secession from the US agenda.
