This should be no surprise whatsoever. Lefties are collectivists. It's intrinsic to their belief that everyone else must submit to their othodoxy. For example if you don't believe in the use of contraception to prevent birth, too bad--we'll pass a law requiring you to offer and pay for it.
Conservatives by contrast (at least as generally defined) believe in individualism. You do your thing, and I'll do mine. As long as there is no force or fraud involved, we'll be one big happy country.
There's still a common myth out there that lefties are fond of personal freedom. This canard was pushed back in the 60's in order to attract hippies to the left. But in fact personal freedom is anathema to the collectivist almost by definition. It was then, and it still is today.
