Aerial gunners kill 14 wolves in North Idaho - Spokesman.com - Feb. 23, 2012
Quote:
Federal wildlife agents shot and killed 14 wolves from helicopters in Idaho’s remote Lolo Zone earlier this month.

The three-day operation, aimed at reducing the number of wolves roaming the backcountry area where elk herds are struggling, was carried out in a partnership between the federal Wildlife Services agency and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Wildlife managers hope a sustained reduction in wolf numbers will allow the Lolo elk herd, which has been severely depressed since the mid 1990s, to rebound.

“We’d like to see one of Idaho’s premier elk populations recover as much as possible,” said Jim Unsworth, deputy director of the department at Boise.
Another of the federal government's experiments gone wrong! They plant wolves in an area with one of the nation's premier elk herds. The wolves decimate the herds...now we have to pay for people to shoot them from helicopters. I give Obama some credit, the executive branch didn't stop this action.

So there's a private market for reintroducing endangered species to their historic breeding grounds?

Yes, let's conserve wildlife by killing it from a helicopter so there's not even a chance of it being able to get away.

There are plenty of elk to go around. Elk haven't ever been endangered if I recall correctly.

Wolves are not either. As a species they never were. Then the feds decided they would trap them in northern Canada, dump them in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming...then they classify them as endangered. They were removed from the ESL a couple years ago, after decimating the elk herds. This may be a case of too little, too late. Still, I give Obama some credit here.

Too bad money had to be spent on it, but the correct move at this point.
