Can someone explain this to me? Tide detergent bottles are a black market item, wanted for their large containers, used in the drug trade and traded for drugs. Does it have to do with making meth? The article doesn't say much, and this is the first I've heard about this. Trading laundry detergent for drugs on the street?

"The arrest is the latest in a nationwide string of detergent thefts that police say are being carried out to fund drug habits.
Thieves target Tide, a leading laundry liquid, because large bottles - which cost some $20 (£13) legally - have become a black market currency.

Ledesma, who has previous convictions for violent crime, was thought to be under the influence of methamphetamine at the time, which Mr Amormino linked to the pattern of thefts.
"Apparently it's used to sell on the street," he said. "They probably get enough to feed small-scale drug habits."

I don't quite buy the black market laundry detergent angle. Could it be used for some new drug manufacturing process?

I saw articles on this still can't believe I'm reading it right. From what I understand, Tide makes a good black market currency because it's widely used and most importantly because the bottles don't have serial numbers and so can't be traced (?). I guess we'll be able to recognize drug dealers from their Tide fresh scent now huh?

Apparently it resales well on the streets since everyone has to wash clothes.

It used to be the big item was expensive steaks or meats. They've eliminated that by giving out "food stamps' where you can get expensive meat and resell.

I assume you can't get detergent with food stamps. Gotta get your drug money somewhere.

Even if I did use drugs there is no way I would ever drink, smoke or inject anything that was ever in a TIDE bottle.

It's the most expensive and the others are cheaper. If your going to steal, get a Lexus not a Kia.

Always said if I'm going to jail, it better be worth the effort.

HT- The article said a combination of common name with high demand combined with high price and no serial numbers for tracking the source.

Even drug dealers want clean underwear.
