Because diesels make much more sense, except to the EPA and the Trendies
I agree about diesel. You can have decent power, amazing torque, and really good mpg.
The Volt is a POS that is designed for urban yuppies that don't drive that far. It will only save on gas if you drive short distances, which most Americans don't, and you'll be spending a good amount on electricity to charge the batteries, which ironically goes through a process which isn't green and has prices that are also rising. Also, good luck if the power goes out...
For the American driver, the best high mpg car is the Prius or a diesel.
Have you even looked at the cost of ownership for the volt?
You can buy most cars, and gas for years and years, and still be cheaper than the volt, which BTW, still needs you to spend money on electricity to charge it.
Some people don't care about things like facts. They blindly follow their anointed leader, and make use of every opportunity to take cheap shots at anyone with whom they disagree.

And unlike a diesel, the Prius's battery pack loses charging capacity every year and mileage, subsequently, decreases more and more, far faster than a diesel car that doesn't rely on batteries. Hell, my laptop is proof of that, my battery lost 50% of its design capacity in just a couple of years
I think it's funny because many of the urban yuppie charging up their volts are doing so with coal generated electricity. But it's electricity and electricity comes from magical holes in the wall and are not evil like fossil fuels! LOL.
I don't understand the mentality of hating on this, I really don't. Do people really not think that our Gov't should invest money in making a US Company a world leader in EV development? Really?!?! Compared to what we spend to bomb, then rebuild other countries (that hate us before and after we do so) it's PENNIES.
Please, the Volt isn't paving the way for future electric cars. If you want to look for a company making 100% pure electric cars and pushing the electric technology boundary, look at Tesla. The model S is coming out this year, model X in another year or 2. Within 5 years, they want to have a 100% electric car for 30K or less. The battery technology is improving every year. The model S will go 300 miles on a charge, already they have new battery technology that in the not so distant future could cut the cost of the battery pack in half and up the distance. GM and the Volt are nothing compared to Tesla.

Yes, they're willingly paying more to avoid the environmental impact of hauling your typical fatass conservative around in a Surburban.
