Kudos to a Governor for doing the right thing in opposition to his own party, something for which he will likely pay a political price for this.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert on Friday vetoed a controversial bill banning public schools from teaching contraception as a way of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

The bill, which also sought to bar instruction on homosexuality or other aspects of human sexuality other than the teaching of abstinence, would have been the first of its kind in the nation if it had become law.

In vetoing the measure, dubbed HB 363, Herbert said that as a parent and grandparent he considered proper sex education in public schools an important component to the moral education youngsters receive at home.

"If HB 363 were to become law, parents would no longer have the option the overwhelming majority is currently choosing for their children. I am unwilling to conclude that the state knows better than Utah's parents as to what is best for their children," he said.

They'll be calling him a RINO in no time. True Republicans only approve of sex in heterosexual married relationships, and preferably in the missionary position only. If you're a Santorum supporter, you need to be skeptical of condoms and other forms of birth control; the withdrawal method is the official approved method of birth control for that crowd.

What he doesn't seem to understand is the schools can now teach whatever they want. This would have banned them from doing so. So pretty much its letting parents off the hook in being responsible enough to teach their kids about sex etc...Wouldn't wanna be him when coming up for re election.

There is absolutely no reason homosexual garbage needs to be taught to straight students. If homosexual students want to take a class then they need to get parents permission then the school should be allowed to do so. Letting the schools have free reign over what our children are taught is idiotic and dangerous.

Learning about homosexuals is good for all students.

Not teaching students about homosexuality and how it is normal throughout the animal kingdom would be brainwashing by ommission.

Uh huh. Because it's not like we have elected school boards or anything...

And anyway, abstinence-only plans work so well ...

If the parents think they need to learn about it then the parents will teach them. Schools can not teach about homosexuality in a neutral way so therefore it should not be taught. I send my kids to school to learn reading, writing, history, science and math. Not to be indoctrinated with homosexual garbage.
