Lightbulb What is the best way to protect your family and property in case of mass civil unrest?

Live in an isolated rural area.

--A sturdy shelter that can withstand a mob of unruly folks attacking it

--Fresh water (at least 100 gallons)

--books (not "e-books" but real books)

--games (for the kids to take their minds off of their fear)

--shotguns (and plenty of shells)

Note: If guns are illegal where you live then scratch this off your list

--gold and silver bullion

What else should one consider to protect themselves from violent mobs who may be heading your one's way?
Regardless of what statutes may or may not exist, a selection of medium-caliber rifles (semi-automatic) with a large (several thousand rounds) of ammo. All weapons should be of same caliber and the ammo should function in all of them. Reloading supplies optional. One weapon should be equiped with a high-power scope (12x or so for long range protection, one with a medium power scope 4x) and another with either iron sights, laser or non/low-magnifcation optical sights.

Night vision equipment. Themal vision equipment.

Quality knifes K-Bar or better and sharpening equipment.

Gen-set and fuel

I think I've got a better plan than all you preparedness freaks: I'll take your stash.

See...with all that stuff, you'll have to stay home and guard it. That ties you down to a specific location. All I have to do is sit out there a few hundred yards away and patiently wait for you to show yourself. You will eventually, then all that stuff is mine. I'll take what I need and move on.

But, I'll be polite and silently thank you for your diligence as I rifle through your collection.
