Mostly because now your Democrats are not the Democrats of the 60s, they are more like Russians of the 60s.
When conservatives or sometimes Republicans are asked to meet in the middle with a Democrat (never the other way around), where is the middle ground going to be between Democracy and Socialism; and why would anyone slide toward Socialism to begin with?

I think that is a little more accurate.

The conservative side doesn't mind supporting the elderly or disabled, it's the long term other stuff and 10,000% increase in paying for government employees we don't need that gets conservatives/Republicans cranky. Especially now when we are beyond broke.

It depends... some state governments operate with no income taxes
