Most every crime novel has a variation of this back-and-forth: Cop collars a suspected criminal. Suspect says the bust is unjust — but faces the uphill challenge of convincing a judge or jury.

But in the recent real-life case of a stranded motorist-turned-alleged felon, there was one juicy twist: The whole altercation was caught on tape under the most outlandish of circumstances.

As a result: Charges were dropped against the driver and prosecutors are investigating whether Coral Springs police officers Nicole Stasnek and Derek Fernandes filed false documents relating to the extraordinary encounter.

None of this would have happened if the driver — Susan Mait, a 60-year-old widow from Coral Springs — hadn’t dropped her phone to the floor of her SUV while the cops yanked her from the vehicle. Unbeknownst to any of them, the phone was still connected to a GEICO customer service rep, who, following company policy, recorded everything that happened.

The audio tape, made public this week, depicts a starkly different exchange than what Stasnek and Fernandes described in their reports and during questioning under oath.

These two can't been fired and sent to jail soon enough.

If these officers did wrong, and it certainly sounds like it, they should face the same legal prosecution that ANY citizen would, including perjury charges, false arrest, etc etc.

LOL, they haven't even been suspended with pay yet. I am sure that the few good cops will handle this in the typical fashion. The bad cops will get a paid vacation, return to work with no loss of salary or benefits and never face any criminal charges. The union and the "blue wall of silence" will make sure that nothing bad ever happens to a dirty cop.

If Florida suffers anymore real estate and tourism problems, it's no wonder. Recent events are going to sour many on visiting or relocating to this state.

They should be fired, but if FL operates anything like my state (WA) they won't. They will get a paid vacation while under investigation, then a lil slap, then back to the important work of state-sponsored predation.

Could have stopped at Union.. The Police officers I know, would not tolerate that behavior.

And yet this kind of stuff happens over and over and over again. The few good cops either condone this behavior or are too cowardly to stand up to their fellow officers. If police officers were the upstanding civil servants that their sycophants would like us to believe, there would be mass resignations and/or protests until these officers were fired, jailed and the police chief and other brass were replaced. To sit by and watch while other police officers tell lies and abuse people and get away with it makes even the supposed good cops part of the problem.
