Maybe if you were a white, straight, Christian person... everyone else back then would surely disagree with you regarding this fantasy utopia. I know older people who don't fit into those categories, and their recollection of the "good 'ol days" are quite different from your rose-colored memories.

My parents are in their 60s, and they could tell you some stories - including when my mother had to break up with her black boyfriend, due to both societal and parental opposition. Or how about the backlash and threats my father received, for promoting a black woman & openly gay man to partners (in his consulting firm) back in the '70s? Yeah, good times those were.

So, being opposed to your son's roommate is a good reason to beat them? Mmmmkay.

Calm down. Never said it was okay to beat him. She needs to be held accountable for that; but probably not a "hate" crime.

Again, you're speculating... and if you'd continued reading the article, you would have seen that she called him gay slurs & shouted that he has AIDS and was going to infect her son. If you don't call that discriminatory hate, I don't know what is. As I said earlier, I'm not 100% on board with the concept of hate crimes, but let's not pretend she was simply mad about the roommate's choice of furniture.

And what about all the husbands and boyfriends who beat up their wives and gf's, while shouting misogynist slurs at them? Why aren't they charged with hate crimes against women as well as spousal/domestic abuse?

Maybe they are? But you can hardly compare a man attacking his WIFE to a woman attacking a non-related gay man... hate crimes are usually defined as assaulting somebody for no reason other than their demographic class, whereas spousal abuse is much much deeper in motivation. It's all about motivation, not the specific words that are used.

Probably the fact that you are dating or married to the person cancels out the possibility of a hate crime which necessitates acting against a person because of their membership in a particular social group.

Exactly. If the abusive husband in question hated all women, he probably wouldn't have married one in the first place - right??

I imagine the same logic could be applied to gay domestic violence (which definitely happens - I witnessed it myself with these lesbian neighbors I used to have), and their use of gay slurs would be irrelevant to the domestic abuse charges. My neighbor called her girlfriend some NASTY things while they fought, but none of us thought she was homophobic as a result.

Which brings us back to this...
