You need to take a civics class. Cisco, Walmart, Exxon, Google, etc do not get to cast votes in the House or Senate.

Politicians dictate what happens in our government. That is a fact.

Of course people who are in favor of more government want to shift blame over to corporations.

Let's say we got rid of all corporations and government was in charge of essentially everything. What would happen? Instead of politicians accepting money and support from companies, they'd be accepting it from the people wanting to move up in the government. Currently, if you are on a committee, you will receive pressure from committee chairs and higher ranking members to vote a certain way. Politicians will follow these "orders" to get future committee positions and even better offices.

The fact is that most politicians sell themselves for more power and money. If it's not corporations making the offer, it will be others. There will always be people trying to barter something. You won't solve this problem by "getting those corporate fat cats", you'll only solve it by electing people who won't play ball with corporations, powerful people and other politicians.

But just go ahead and keep blaming corporations if you are so inclined to ignore the real problem.

You can choose to, but it's hard. Corporations are everywhere. They control most food distribution, production of manufactured goods, and much of the media. MSNBC, Fox News, CNN; they're all run by corporations. Hell, if you go the mom and pop grocery store, there's a good chance you'll still be buying a product from a corporation.

Corporate goods are nearly impossibly to avoid. You have to be extremely informed, which is difficult given that corporations run the media.

It can be difficult to avoid all corporations, but if you really dislike one, you can easily choose to avoid that particular one.

Lightbulb Why are people so paranoid of the government but not the corporations?

Because they've been told to be.

Any questions?

What's cute is that you think that's what I said.

I notice that when talking about this subject, people admit that our representatives arent truly representing us, but in a discussion about the legitimacy of government people will say that "we are the government" or "they are accountable to us"...we see politicians coming and going and we continue to get the same things. Voting doesnt change the fact that politicians are being used by others for their benefit. This is yet another reason I'm an anarchist.

Not directed at you Casper, just a general comment

Per the title -

Who makes laws? Government or corporations?

Who controls the police, the military and the regulatory agencies, any or all of whom can utterly destroy you? Government or corporations?

Who can decide tomorrow that you are a criminal by outlawing that which is legal today? Government or corporations?

Who can force you against your will to do their bidding and back up it with a monopoly on force, aggression and even life/death? Government or corporations?

Ask any mortgage holder - I can buy property from corporations, but can only ever rent property from the government. Pay off a mortgage and the corporations leave you alone, but even with the mortgage paid off, you're one year of missed property taxes away from the government getting your house for the low low cost of free.

I don't trust, love or even much care for most corporations, but I sure as hell don't fear them because they cannot force me to buy their products, must compete for my business, and have no power over law, force, or policy. My interactions with corporations is purely voluntary. I cannot say the same for Leviathan.
