Actually there probably is a lot of work for folks that can fix tracked (tanks and bulldozers) vehicles. What are Diesel mechanics paid in the outside world?
Well the young people are getting a break aren't they. This was true when I was in college way back in the 90s but my generation was labelled "slacker". These young kids whine and cry so much and are so freaking rude, I frankly don't care what happens to them. They can pull themselves up or die, the same as every previous generation has.
The American Dream is dead for sure and the Baby Boomers can all rot in hell as far as I'm concerned- lecherous idiots most of them.
I am a Baby Boomer and I am very glad I am at the retirement end of my career. For all but the very gifted and privileged these are very Hard Times indeed. Goldenchild is not whining but eloquently expressing deep frustration while accurately describing the existing situation. The BB's have worked in ways, and their children more so, that are destroying our economy and culture.
This does not have to be. We, as a country, do not have to continue to waste our wealth as the petroleum and Banking thugs of the world. We could put those resources to use rebuilding our own house (which the boomers have worn out) while employing many of our people. Our elite BB’s have decided not to do this because they can make, or steal, more money on bloated military contracts and imported slave labor.
Our economy is being destroyed by our businessmen, financiers and owners requiring ever higher returns in less and less time. This has turned equity markets into casinos with huge winnings for the manipulators and great losses for everyone else. We once had a government that destroyed monopolies now we have one that worships the corrupt. We send thousands of people top jail for selling a tiny bit of dope but reward a few with million dollar bonuses for colluding to make great profits. We have one Law for the Poor and NO Law for the really rich.
Some of you lucky say “Buck up and get working and stop whining.” That is just putting the blame where it does not belong. You should be saying to the owner class, “Stop cheating.” What we are really creating is a fertile ground for revolution. Hopefully we can do it by finding a latter day Theodore Roosevelt that will restore real capitalism to our financial casinos and real law and justice for all to our country.
We screwed it up but this and the next generations are going to have to set it right. Good Luck.
Yes, the people at the top of the income ladder have learned that it is hard to make better products. That does not yield quick enough profits, nor is it guaranteed that innovation will occur or be bankable. The current model is to sell snake oil (phony derivatives, etc.), to squeeze more out fo the worker, and to pay goons to lobby for lower taxes. Our corporations are acting more like tumors than vital organs. The weird thing is how many people seem to want to defend the indefensible these days.
The pick yourself up by your boot straps model is laudable, of course, but the political and economic realities facing today's workers are very different. I am midcareer and trying to make a career change, and I can tell you, it is unbelievably competitive out there right now. Thankfully, I have a job, so I am muddling along. So, for those who profited from the booms, tax cuts, and the disinvestments of the last few decades, you really have no idea what is facing today's young people. While I agree they need to "suck it up" and keep at it, it is also true that these are the most difficult times we have seen in two generations.
It's easy....stop raising your children to be employees.
Great point...I have also thought that one of the problems with educational tracks is that people are working toward a specific slot rather than general competence. People take on huge debt for a promised job that is a pretty sketchy promise in changing times.
Now, I have to argue. While having a flexible and entrepreneurial approach is certainly good advice, it seems that most of us will be employees. I cannot think of a single country where most of the people don't work for wages, either for a company or a government or nonprofit enterprise. I think a major challenge these days is that we are overproducing specialists in many fields, but not helping folks develop the flexibility to land on their feet.
I would also note that many of the so-called scrappy individualists, like general contractors, are in the tank now because their self-taught specialties (e.g., building luxury additions on high end homes) are in the tank. I am genuinely impressed by people without a trust fund, inheritance, etc. who can work in a field for a while, shift gears and start from scratch in another and be successful. It is impressive, but it is also pretty rare.

Quite well actually... Esp. if you are wanting to work in the Oil and Natural Gas field or go into the Commercial and Industrial Construction industries that are just begging for Experienced Welders, Electricians, Heavy Duty Mechanics, Computer techs and IT people and other experienced trades and IT/Tech people Right Now...
Work is were you make it, a college education doesn't guarantee anything. You have to make yourself marketable. Nobody owes you a damn living, and until the crybaby youths of this country figure that out, good luck living on the government handouts.
Grow the hell up.
I disagree. You can't demand people earn a living unless they are given the means to do so. Frankly, I can understand why people decide to go out & rob banks, sell drugs, prostitute etc. They make a lot more money then working at FcDonalds that's for sure.

I've wondered why they keep issuing those work Visas when unemployment is so high. I don't buy they can't find qualified workers.
"too much money" most likely equals "enough money to pay the rent and eat with".

I'm a firm believer in people cleaning up their OWN damn messes. It's what my mother taught and if it was good enough for her...

The OP is pretty on point. Just because he's frustrated doesnt mean he's looking for a handout. Technology has grown faster than the work force could keep up and we're seeing the effects.
So totally this ^^

Yeh...because it's SO entitled to expect to be able to pay rent, buy food, pay various bills after you've gone into debt and studied your ass off in college. Uh Huh.
I'm sure you would also call me entitled, because I expected to be given a job I was pretty much promised after college (this was my externship) but was given to the Mexican dishwasher instead to save money. IMO the ones who buckled down with the books & got good grades AND went into debt for these jobs are the ones who should be given them.
There are very few options for young people today. College has become a complete rip-off for anyone who doesn't come from a filthy rich family. 60% of recent college grads can't find full-time work in their college educated fields of study. Thoughts?
The current unemployment rate for college graduates (Bachelor's Degree or Higher) over 25 years old is pretty low (4.2%). I don't see any statistics that say they aren't making what they are worth in entry level jobs in their field.
Maybe grade inflation has too many high school students and their parents convinced they are college material. What are their expectations coming straight out of college? I know some of them have zero or next to zero work experience. That's a change from say two decades ago.
I learned two trades in the Navy. One was machinest and the other thug. I put myself through college on the first and reserved the latter for special occasions.
Maybe these companies should consider training some people to do those jobs. Seems to me they want some other company to do the training first. That is just stealing from other companies or the employees.
