Geez, it's about time. They have a population 4 or 5 times ours. They have virtually no infrastructure in their vast country. There are many areas one would describe as third world. It is unbelievable it has taken this long. Although they really don't have a larger economy that us yet, someday they will and it will mean exactly nothing.
Funny, in the past loud-mouthed Americans kept bragging they got the biggest economy, the biggest this and that. But when that changes one day, it all of a sudden doesn't mean anything anymore
This article suggests that maybe China is the world number one economy today.
They also have 1.2B people. For their economy to be "just ahead of ours" means thay have 70% higher poverty level as well. Even our levels of poverty would be a welcome increase for most Chinese. Our poor have televisions, air conditioning and flushing toilets, while theirs eay grass soup and are used as forced labor.

Most of us couldn't give a sh^% who is biggest and never did. One thing (most do realize) is that our country is currently being dragged into a euro style governing process and that has far more implications than not having the biggest economy.

I'm more concerned about the quality of living of a country than purely their GDP. With that said, the Q of L has been decreasing in America for a while now.

Yeah, in twenty years when China is a nation of men, (the inevitable result of a one child policy in a nation that values boys over girls) we'll see how well they do.

I'm more concerned about the quality of living of a country than purely their GDP. With that said, the Q of L has been decreasing in America for a while now.
As eventually all things equalize, China and other areas will get a better quality of life and we'll get a lesser one. But since the perception of the quality of life is subjective, we won't notice so much since it will be what we're used to.
It's already true for those who've fallen out of the middle class and yet have grown sufficently used to it that they've made peace with life.
Thing is, governments can choose to influence this, but its a force beyond them and in time it will win.
