I don't understand why people have this idea that, because he was charged with second degree murder, a jury can only convict him of second degree murder or aquit him of second degree murder.

The fact that a second degree murder charge was filed means that a jury has the option of second degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, or not guilty. It's not an all of nothing situation.
