The OP ignores the fact that the South remained downtrodden and poor due to the profiteers of the North, many of whom did not choose to voluntarily give up their slaves until Lincoln's Emancipation Proclaimation.
Yes, Progressivism did much to harm the South, as did slavery, as did Lincoln damage the US Constitution by usurping powers not granted the Executive Branch.
