If your gonna do it because you think you might have done something wrong and want to check it out I suggest you have a Law firm make the request on your behalf.
If you have ever had to have a National Background check conducted you have a file.
I remember hearing a story like this some two decades ago... Might have been an urban legend, but it went something like this...
A guy was SURE that "they" were spying on him. He was sure that the FBI or some other alphabet agency had been tracking him and watching his every move. Real black-helicopter stuff. So he writes a letter, demanding a copy of everything "in his file." He got back a copy of his own letter, and nothing else...
IOW, there was no file on him until he made the request. He hadn't been "on the radar," but through his own actions, he ended up there.
Food for thought...
Your story reminds me of another, true story I once read in Psychology Today:
A man became convinced that the Government was observing his every action and putting it all into a file. For instance, if he went into a 7-11 and bought candy, he was convinced that after he left the clerk (being an agent) made note of the fact. Movies, dinner, dates, etc., all were being chronicled by the Government. Everyone he encountered was a federal agent, he thought.
His therapist (for the man's family made him undergo therapy) came up with an excellent solution: the man was sent an official-looking letter telling him to go to a certain office at a certain time. He arrives at the place, very nervous.
Behind a desk is an 'official looking' man (suit, tie, etc) with a massive paper file. The 'official' then proceeds to tell the man that he was correct: the Government had been observing his actions for the past decade or so, and that 'he did fine', and so the observation was over.
The man left the office, vastly relieved, and, according to the article, no longer displayed the anxiety and paranoia he had exhibited for years.

I'm just doing it more out of idle curiosity then anything else. I've visited 4Chan, and many other less then savory web sites as I work in the IT industry and it's always good to know about the types of threats you see in day to day life.
I also own a few guns, and have voted Republican, Independent and Democratic at various times. And I participate in the mud-wrestling match that is C-D. At least one of those should create a record on me.

What the hell is 4chan? some porn site.
See that's the problem with youngsters. If you want your porn to stay anonymous buy a frigging Hustler.
I'm sure anyone who goes on the internet has a porn file. All it takes is on re-direct and bang they got ya. All these files will be used when the time comes to fill the FEMA camps. I wonder if joining CPUSA will get one a pass? Probably not. They'll be the first hauled off after their work is done I'm sure.

Like that's anonymous... even if you pay cash there is a surveillance camera recording the purchase. And... Hustler? Really? I'll pass. Limp gay guys posed next to only acceptable looking women... give me the good stuff. Try it, once you go High Definition Video you will never go back to stills. Lucky for me I've got zero interest in seeing underage performers. I'm cool with the FBI knowing the rest. It's not like I can stop them. Besides, if God strikes me dead for the sin of viewing porn, there is no record of it once my browser is shut down. You have a whole attic full of the stuff for your old lady to get rid of.

I found myself on that site one day out of total curiosity. It all started with some Wikipedia entry...or some version of Wikipedia, there's so many, about some total nut job that would...man, I can't remember now...made videos..I think that was it...man, that kid was a loser. I just remember a photo or video of his room and it was plastered with, basically, toys. Comic stuff. He would make "comic strips" or books something, incessantly followed some girl, tried hard to get a girlfriend...it was a massive, horrifying train wreck.
Anyway, the people at 4chan messed with him hardcore. I didn't know what 4chan even was so I went there and looked around...also some site and the only thing I can remember about it is "b". They mess with a lot of folks...not in a nice way, either.
So if a visit out of curiosity gets added to my file, oh well. I have a file I'm sure because of a few jobs I've had, serious background checks, but considering I got those jobs, I'm not worried.

Oh yeah......re-directs.....that's it.
