I found this article this morning reading the British newspapers in England while looking at their Titanic memorial articles. I would say that they made a good choice in picking Washington. Ole George beat out Rommel and Napoleon. To me the British disciplined 'by the book' military tactics was outdated by the time they tried to take on Washington's forces in the Revolutionary War. Looks like Washington left a sore spot with the Brits, even today.

The American was voted the winner in a contest run by the National Army Museum to identify the country's most outstanding military opponent.

Dr Stephen Brumwell, who had championed Washington, said: "As British officers conceded, he was a worthy opponent."

Kinda stupid. The only thing that saved Britain from being invaded by the Germans in World War Two was that Britain is an island. Anyone remember the "blood, sweat, and tears" speech by Winston Churchill?

Interesting. If you think about it though it make some sense. What the American colonists did was truly revolutionary at the time, forcibly separating from one of the most powerful empires in the world.

Still I think Napoleon and Hitler would rank as bigger threats in that an invasion of the British Isles was a very real possibility during both conflicts.

I can think of a bunch of greater foes.

Eamon de Valera
Michael Collins
Jan Smuts (later turned ally during World War I and II)
Ian Smith
Mathama Ghandi
the British Labour Party

I think if Adolf would have focused all his forces squarely on England instead of Russia he would have been able to invade them and possible conquer them.

According to the Brits, Washington was a greater foe than Collins.

I think out of this list Ghandi reigns supreme not only did he rip out the crown jewel of the British Empire, India's independence quickened the lost of most of Britain's Empire in Africa and Asia.

I forgot another one, the most unknown - Col. Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. Led the German colonial army in German East Africa (modern day Tanzania) during World War I. 2,000 Germans and 13,000 Africans held off 300,000 British/South African/British Empire, French, Belgian, and Portuguese troops for the entire war. The only German force that was never defeated on the battlefield.
