A National Rifle Association executive has accused the media of manufacturing controversy over the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida.

Speaking at the gun owners' group's annual meeting, Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's executive vice-president, said media had ignored other violent crimes in favour of the case, listing other recent killings in cities across the country.

His accusations against the media are on a sound footing. Anytime a news organization edits a recording to make it appear racial in nature, then there is little doubt about media slant. Notice that the national media organizations gave only lip service to the firing of one responsible for the editing, but the tone of the incident had already been set to depict Zimmerman as a racist who shot an unarmed teenager.

Zimmerman has been tried and found guilty by the media.

He will be tried and found innocent by a jury of his peers, all 12 of whom will then be judged racist by the media.

The media has definitely sensationalized the issue. There is no doubt about it, but I think the law will be challenged, and the NRA needs to worry, because they pushed for that law.

Why does the NRA need to worry? Care to elaborate?

Wayne LaPierre is obviously stupid.

Do people really not understand that the issue that has led to protests was not the shooting itself, but the inept response of the Sanford PD?

I just told you why: because they lobbied heavily for the law, especially in Florida. Personally I support the law, but it seems this case will offer an opportunity for its opponents to challenge the law. If they can prove it has resulted in unnecessary deaths (some studies say it has done that), then it will do nothing but increase anti-gun sentiment and make NRA look like the bad guy.

People who think the NRA is the "bad guy" already thought so long before the Martin shooting. Nothing to see there. Next......

No. There are a lot of people who didn't care one way or the other, and this case could dip them on the 'anti-gun / anti-NRA' camp. You know it as well as I do that anti-gun people will try to capitalize on this, so of course NRA worries about it. That is why they are issuing theses comments.
