The end of an era. Now NASA can get back to doing Air and Space exploration and science. We really need a world wide program to set up a manned base on the Moon to facilitate future exploration to the planets.
I suggest we transfer funds from our and others War Departments to fund these programs. Say half of their current funding.
At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I am absolutely floored at what Space-X has managed to do. That's my idea of American entrepreneurship at its best.
I actually believe we would have been further along, had the space program been in private hands. NASA has become an over bloated waste of money, that has produced very little for a HUGE investment. What have we really gained? We will never reach other planets with present technology and this is what we should be concentrating on. Launching a man into space via putting him on top of a stick of dynamite has to change, it is too expensive and to risky and we don't know yet how to survive long term space travel. We have a long way to go!

Was there some law forbidding private enterprise from space exploration while the shuttle program was happening ?
We'll never know all the scientific benefits derived from the space program but i'm sure glad they made the effort to get up there.
As for future methods of space travel? as long as we have the curiosity to explore our means of getting into space will improve, yes we do have a long way to go and hopefully we'll have the time to get there.

Well... There was in fact a policy that all government payloads would be using the Shuttle. That's a huge chunk of the launch market taken right out of competition. Of course, once it was clear that the Shuttle wasn't living up to the hype, the policy was lifted and old-fashioned rockets came back into vogue - at a fraction of the price, as it turned out.
