In a Purdue University classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United States. It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age.

However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president.

The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?"

THEY BREED AND WALK AMONG US AND VOTE....

The dumbing down of America.

How very very sad.

Horse hockey. Americans are better educated now than at any time in our history. Even in my life time, when I was a kid, most adults never finished high school. In the 19th century, a good many couldn't even read. During the days of the Revolution and for a hundred years thereafter, very few had any formal education at all.

Yet, somehow or other, those "dummies" managed to create the greatest Republic on earth. Yeah, it took a lot of trial and error (which nobody these days is willing to allow for), but America is what is today because of those "dumbed down" voters.

Guess what? Our democracy WILL survive, and prosper, and those "dumb" voters are the ones who will make it happen.

Oh ye of little faith.

Yes, Americans call tell you who are the best quarterbacks, which team has the best chance to make it to the Super Bowl, the latest about Linsey Lohan, what are the top ten songs.
How many times have you encountered a 'your' when it should be 'you're'?
Surf American TV channels, all 200 of them. Have a look at the list of best selling books in America. Ask any American to tell you factual data about France, Germany, Argentina, or many other countries. Ask an American a question about history. Ask an American who are the best known American intellectuals. Ask Americans if the prefer science or religion. Surf the TV channels again. Show a world map to an American and ask that person to find Chile. Ask an American how many Iraqi civilians were killed in the war.
This could go on and on...

oh yes, we as americans are well educated these days, in many technical aspects. for instance most people know how to operate a computer these days, when i was in high school we barely knew what computers were. many people these days can build their own computers, and even do some programming of them, in my day programming a computer was far more difficult because you had to wire the bread board properly.

today people know who brittany spears is, who won many music and movie awards, can tell you the line ups of their favorite sports team, etc.

we know how to build and rebuild cars, we know how airplanes fly, many of us can even build their own airplanes. we understand for the most part how a nuclear reactor works. and these are all well and good, but the problem is that many people today do not know about our history as a country.

too many people think that july 4, 1776 was when the japanese bombed pearl harbor. and how many people know who the 13th president was? in fact how many people know who the vice president was during the george h.w. bush years was? or who was jimmy carters vice president?

too many people dont know the three branches of the federal government, and too many people can not tell you what freedoms the first amendment to the constitution guarantees, and way too many people can not tell you how many amendments there are to the constitution.

Indeed, what exactly makes a natural born citizen superior in any way to one who acquired citizenship? Why cannot someone like Arnold, who worked hard, firmly established himself in US and legally acquired citizenship run for presidency?

The real problem we have is 1/3rd of the people want more government and realize it means more taxes, 1/3rd want lower taxes and know it means less government and 1/3rd want lower taxes and more government and they are the third that usually get their way.

A good question deserving it's own thread instead of hijacking this one....

the founding fathers did NOT want foreign born people taking over the top spot in this country. if you look at the history of europe, you will find many instances where the top leader of the country was NOT born in the country they lead. take france for instance. napoleon was born on corsica, not in france, and yet he took over the french throne and we saw what happened there. europe also had the issue where by virtually all the monarchs in every country were related either by blood or by marriage, or both. this is what the founding father wanted to avoid for this country.
