And this is important because while today we might compete for oil, in the future, we'll compete for water.

Can you imagine, water aquifers that were filled 5 thousand years ago?

I dunno why someone didn't think of this sooner, with all the droughts they have.

Oh goodie, I'm sure the developed nations will be over there shortly to extract it and leave the area worse than it was before. God bless America, am I right?

Apparently one of the reasons Qadaffi was invaded and killed was because he discovered vast aquifers under Libya and wanted to make a countrywide irrigation system. Can't have that in Africa. All countries, except South Africa, must not be independent.

Depends on who is leading the charge. Sometimes it's the US, sometimes it's the UK, sometimes it's Israel, sometimes it's the UN

Nah, desert dwellers are more than smart enough to not waste water like that. The Mexicans live just fine in big cities in the Sonora Desert, the Spanish in the parched countryside have survived for a very very long time, etc.

The laws of physics dictate that all of the water that has *ever* been in this world is still here. The aquifer, has not been sequestered for 5,000 years. It is constantly being depleted and replaced from groundwater in a continuous cycle. If you suddenly take the water and prematurely reintroduce it into the evaporation/precipitation cycle you are going to have some very serious results in the way of increased flooding rainfall, changes in vegetation patterns and yes, climate change.

Obviously, the proponents of this plan do not care about the indigenous peoples who have learned to adjust to this pattern and live fine without the benefit of the "extra" water. They are, instead, worried about shipping this water somehow to the "west" so that we can benefit from it without regard to how this impacts the rest of the world. (sound familiar?) It is so much easier to steal someone elses stuff than to sacrifice with a little conservation, don'tcha know.

My main interest in the article was to find out which countries in Africa the reserves were located. It confirmed my suspicions.....North Africa is essentially an extension of the Middle East where water wars are already being waged to some degree. I believe we can expect the threat of water shortages to be an increasingly larger pretext for war in that part of the world. North Africa may well have an unintended bullseye on its back.
