The policy actually encourages wasteful spending by the poor. Some poor smuck family struggling to climb out of the abyss is forced to spend instead of saving for the future. Just me, but isn't saving a good thing?
Yes, and this is one of the frustrating aspects of programs which are means-tested.
Fortunately there are at least a few people trying to promote saving and asset-building for those who need it most.
I know this is going to sound harsh, but I think we need to eliminate food stamps entirely and go back to passing out commodities to the poor. Those who were truly needy appreciated them and those who would abuse the system weren't to anxious to get food that was nutricious but wasn't the greatest in the world.
Food stamps are supposed to be there to keep people from starving, not to support the level of comfort they've become accustomed to. If a person has more than $2000 in the bank they are not on the verge of starvation. I don't think its unreasonable to expect people to use their own resources to feed themselves before asking the public to feed them.
I think limits on money in the bank clearly show whom they’re aiming this towards. No need to read between the lines because it’s spelled out. It’s their attempt to punish the most vulnerable in our society.
No, the most vulnerable are already protected as they have no assets, no savings, no second car. The attempt is to push those over the edge onto the rolls of government dependency who are just hanging on. Remeber states have to come up with the money as Obamacare is forcing tens of thousands onto state Medicaid rolls who were not on it previously. The money has to come from somewhere.
Means testing is a good idea but the base measurement numbers are flawed, especially for the elderly. The real zinger for them is about to happen just after this year's November elections when Obamacare cuts $8.3 Billion from Medicare. The meager savings of those being means tested and at/near the cut-off will evaporate very quickly. This is where good community food banks will make a real difference in people's lives.
