All of these wacko English web sites are carrying this news, you just *might* notice no accredited reputable web sites amongst them:

Let Me Google That

Unless you consider these to be reputable accredited web sites:

Did you see the NASA link I posted on this? The other Japanese (science) site I posted is part of the hinode project.

Japanese are still trying to figure out how to take down Godzilla. With Monster X on Mars now and the Mothra twins in the hospital due to radiation poisoning from fukushima they are in dire straits. This could be the diversion they need to unleash a new monster.

How do we know this "article" is bull****? This one sentence:

Quote:
" However, it is known that the shifts coincide with the increase and decrease in the number of sunspots over an about 11-year cycle"
Is the eleven year sunspot cycle real? Absolutely!!!!

NASA/Marshall Solar Physics, The Sunspot Cycle

Does it coincide with polar shifts? Not even close!!!!

NASA - 2012: Magnetic Pole Reversal Happens All The (Geologic) Time

Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal.
11 years... hundreds of thousands of years... nope. Not a whole lot of coinciding going on there.

The Solar magnetic field does not have a significant effect on the Earth's magnetic field and never did. Both are subject to instabilites that we have not completely explained. Human scientists need to watch more and talk less until they figure it out.

How is this political or a controversy?

Shifting of poles is going to happen. It has for a long time.

Unless some one is so ignorant of science they think the world is going to end...it's cool but not a huge deal.

Yes apparently they flip ever so often.

I'm sure Al Gore and Michael Moore will come up with some new tax needed for this naturally occurring "problem". As soon as they hear about it.

Not sure what article you are referencing. The original topic was the solar "poles". So I think there is some confusion here. What they are observing with this new technology is information they do not appear to have had before. I think people are mixing and matching the earth and sun w/ the similar terminology.

It does say this.

When a similar phenomenon occurred about 300 years ago, the Earth's average temperature fell slightly.

The current sunspot cycle has stretched for close to 13 years. A similar situation occurred in the 17th to 18th century, when the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere decreased by 0.6 C. The research team believes the quadrupolar pattern also emerged at that time.

From the NASA hinode/SOHO page.
quote:
Mapping such fields, however, is a crucial part of understanding how – and, in turn, when – the sun will exercise its next flip. This flip coincides with the greatest solar activity seen on the sun in any given cycle, known as "solar maximum."

While the cycle unfolds with seeming regularity every 11 years, in two upcoming papers scientists highlight just how asymmetrical this process actually is. Currently the polarity at the north of the sun appears to have decreased close to zero – that is, it seems to be well into its polar flip from magnetic north to south -- but the polarity at the south is only just beginning to decrease.
