This is why we need to get Democrats out of office.
Nancy when asked about the 50% of Americans that don't pay any income tax -
“I wish they would earn more so they can pay more, and that’s what we’re about, the creation of good-paying jobs in our country that contribute to our international competitiveness to keep America number one.”
Democrats don't want people to make more money for their own benefit, they want them to make more money so they can take more money - and then waste it on things that Democrats usually waste money on - like solar technology, etc.
I don't mean to necessarily defend the current tax rates or public spending levels, but it's really disingenuous to take her out of context like you did.
The question put to her was getting at why nearly 50% of Americans pay no income tax at all. I thought this was a common Republican complaint - and a fair one, by the way - that lots of people pay nothing, yet get lots of benefits...while the rich foot the bill.
So what Nancy is saying is that if they earned more, then they would make the threshold wherein they would be paying in for income tax. It's not the same as implying that she wants to tax everyone at 100% and collectivize all property, etc. You can disagree with her and other Democrats on what the tax rates and public spending priorities/levels should be and still agree in principle that the 50% that doesn't pay anything should pay something, whether at their current or higher income levels.
So the question really is: do you believe that taxes should be 0% or somewhere North of there for the nearly 50% that pay no taxes today? I guess if you're an extreme enough libertarian, you might be making the argument that all taxes are communist and should be abolished... not sure if that's what you're going for...

You DO know that you are throwing pearls before swine, don't you?
Good post, but people just want to vent their hatred here, not become involved in an actual discussion of current events.
The democrats could espouse every single idea coming from the republicans, and the republicans would find some way to trash their own ideas; this thread is a case in point.
After numerous threads started by them complaining that 50% of people pay NO taxes, they are now defending those people's right to pay NO taxes.
Hatred can be blinding.
This thread seriously brings into question the intellegence level of some posters...

Pelosi was pointing out, accurately, that the problem isn't that poor people don't pay income taxes on their poor earnings. The problem is that they don't earn enough income to be subject to income taxes under the current rates established by the Bush era tax-cuts of 2001 and 2003.
The redress of that is not tax-the-poor, as the hard-right crows. The solution is for the poor to be lifted out of poverty so they earn more money and thus are subject to income tax.
What do we hear from the usual suspects on CD about that reasoned statement? "Socialism! Communism!"
So the idea that the noble notion of lifting people out of poverty to join the middle class so they can financially contribute to the nation instead of burdening the nation, is Socialism according to the compassionate conservatives.
(Let's also not forget that although the poor don't pay income taxes, the still pay other taxes.)
The glue sniffing might be responsible for the way she thinks! but the platform in which she speaks of, she truly beleives what she is speaking.
This is the threshold of the Dems, Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax, and believe of it. That women is crazy, and not because she is ill.
The thing is they are so convinced what they say to the American people we are going to buy, they cannot fantom that some of us have our own minds.
I heard it was lead paint chips she ate as a child....
