I see, in this thread the conservatives pretend that their "side" isn't the one harboring most of the anti-gay bigots. Glad you all are so tolerant, now call out those in your midst who aren't.
This is just my opinion, but from everything I have read and heard, Romney is the most "Gay Friendly" of the Republicans running to be the candidate for president. Romney's big "opposition" to same-sex marriage was probably just a ploy to win over some of the hard core conservative base in the GOP during the primaries.
I do believe that one thing the Ron Paul supporters understand correctly is that Mitt Romney is really just "Obama Lite" ... but that is not necessarily a bad thing.
To give credit where credit is due, Romney - unlike some of those clowns like Bachmann, Perry and Santorum - is in touch with reality; and is recognizing that the LGBT community is emerging as a powerful and significant sector of the voting public.
Some reason he can't be gay friendly and oppose same-sex marriage?
Richard Grenell, whom Mitt Romney chose last month as his presidential campaign’s national security and foreign policy spokesman, stepped down from his post Tuesday, suggesting that the conservative backlash over his sexuality prevented him from being effective in his role.
Romney would have lost the conservative Evangelical vote. Smart move
...for this election. Poor move if he gives a damn about not being viewed in 50 years the way that segregationists are today. Romney did nothing to stop the anti-gay backlash against this guy.
I also consider it sad that this guy wasn't protested by the far right on the grounds that he was a rude and deceitful bully while in the Bush administration or for being a crude sexist.
Richard Grenell, an openly gay and longtime Republican foreign policy spokesman hired last month by Mitt Romney’s campaign, abruptly resigned on Tuesday after anti-gay elements in the party criticized his appointment and some Republican advisers said Mr. Grenell had been sidelined by the campaign during a busy foreign policy week.
The Romney campaign issued a statement saying that it had sought to keep Mr. Grenell from quitting. And according to some Republicans, while Mr. Grenell’s sexual orientation was not an issue for the campaign, the Romney team had cut Mr. Grenell out of the loop on some issues after feeling a surprising pressure from some social conservatives.
Being openly gay is simply unacceptable to a large number of Republicans. If you are openly gay, they will label you as an activist who is shoving it down their throats. It's truly a sad situation. I would like to be able to consider being a Republican, but there's so much intolerance in that party, I would never feel comfortable doing it.
