The father of two of the students who walked out of this disgusting presentation has spoken out and has some interesting things to say:
"The attitude of the conference coordinators was as disturbing as Dan Savage's,"... "They reportedly said that as journalists the kids should have been able to sit there and take it all in. They felt the only thing that they had failed at was to not clearly tell the attending schools about Dan Savage. If they had to warn the schools, why would they let him speak?"
"In addition, Naman says, some of Savage's remarks were sexual in nature, and inappropriate for an audience of high school students.""He made lewd references to his mate in Speedos--something about having to be pried off of him to come to the session. In any context, speaking to highschoolers of any sexual type, that is flat out wrong. My 16-year-old daughter was there."
"This puke felt at ease enough to speak like that in front of a little girl. What a pig."
A 16 year-old is not a "little girl," so stop being dramatic... I work with teens every day, and most of them have done stuff even I would be embarrassed to admit.
REALITY CHECK: Not ALL Gays have gone through the type of bullying Savage did. And there is NOTHING to indicate the Christian kids in the audience ever did any bullying to Savage or any other gay person. They don't need to pay any "price."
If this man isn't publicly apologized for by no one less than the POTUS, who has supported him, and disassociated from the Anti-Bullying Campaign, then this whole thing needs to be scratched for it will have been revealed for what it is - A Bully Pulpit/Christian Silencing Political Maneuver that reeks of Religious Discrimination & Harassment. These tactics will not be tolerated. No child deserves this treatment.
Again with the drama! You're acting like this was some nationwide government-sponsored or required event, when in reality nobody outside of that auditorium would even know about it if not for this news story. And don't you think the POTUS has bigger things to worry about right now, like the deficit and upcoming election? And where's all your outrage for the public figures & "journalists" who regularly bash gay people? Selective faux rage, as usual...

This discussion has moved so far from what actually occurred into yet another way to find a tempest in a tea pot. It's unfortunate. It could have been a good opportunity to actually talk about religion and sexuality and how they need not be divisive, but instead it's a bunch of partisan yelling, misconstruing and escalating to the nth degree, creating a false dichotomy of gay vs. Christian (which it wasn't and isn't).
Most haters that I have met are not Christians or anything else. They have no foundation or faith in anything..that is why they hate- their hate can be described as a fear filled panic.

The topic is not "religion and sexuality." The topic is the indefensible behavior of an adult bullying Christian school kids at an anti-bullying conference.

that does't excuse an adult from acting like a jerk. Adults should set a good example of behavior.

I have no further response. Even the language used to frame the premise is inflammatory and pulls for emotional reaction rather than any kind of reasoned discussion. ETA: And it wasn't an anti-bullying conference, it was a journalism conference. Those facts are pesky sometimes.

(Aren't we all getting a bit tired of this worn out attempt at defense for adults acting poorly?)
