Well hopefully China keeps its word and the guy remains safe.

Mr. Chen entered the American Embassy six days ago with the assistance of American officials because of the “exceptional circumstances, including his disabilities,” a senior American official told American reporters traveling with Mrs. Clinton. “On humanitarian grounds we assisted him and allowed him to remain on a temporary basis,” the official said.
Mr. Chen, a lawyer who had campaigned against forced abortions and sterilizations conducted as part of China’s policy of limiting families to one child, suffered an injury to his foot during his escape from his house in Shandong province last week and was walking with the help of a crutch, the official said.
During his time at the embassy, Mr. Chen adhered to his position that he was not seeking asylum in the United States but wanted to stay with his family in China as a free person, said the official, who was involved in the three-way negotiations that involved Mr. Chen and officials from the United States and China.
“He expressed his hope to stay in China and he never varied from that,” a second senior official involved in the negotiations, who briefed reporters, said.

Hopefully the thugs ruling China will realize there are more important things than their sacred control of everything. Stop worrying guys, the Warlord Era is not coming back.

But the Obama administration has no power to enforce his safety, and he may well disappear into a hospital for involuntary organ donors. In the midst of all their current turmoil, I bet the Communist Party would love to see Chen vanish.

Chen never asked for asylum though, and the pressure on him from both the US and China must have been intense. You just knew this administration would cave to the Chinese.

The most important thing is that they continue to be in charge and reaping enormous financial benefits. Don't rock the apple cart.

This whole incident points out to the people that they are in a mono-party system and there is often nowhere to turn for recourse.

You have to understand that this is a country that has managed in 20 years time to widely convince through repeated one-sided propaganda that the tianamen square protestors were a small group of criminals and other wrong-doers.

Explain. Cave how exactly? The guy didn't want to defect, and he needed medical attention.

So what was this administration supposed to do exactly?

BTW...gimme the name of the last administration to stand up to China (whatever the hell that is).

Someday we might get to the truth.

From the LA Times - Bob Fu of Texas-based ChinaAid Assn. also said he had received reliable reports that Chen's decision to leave the embassy was done reluctantly because "serious threats to his immediate family members were made by Chinese government." Fu said the reports show the United States "has abandoned Mr. Chen."
