A good friend of mine works in the Oncology Department of a health care network connected to a well-respected hospital. She's not internsively trained in medicine; her job is to help patients work around, as much as possible, the financial hardship that always accompanies catastropic illness.

One wing of the anchor facility is named for the MD who discovered and corrected my brother's clubbed feet in the early 1950's, and who discovered and corrected a severe curvature in my spine some ten years later. On the day I read his obituary in the Harrisburg Patriot, I passed it around to a few of my fraternity brothers in tribute to the man who saved my ability to walk and function normally.

But that was im the the day of individual care .... and individual responsibility My friend informs me that that same network is now fortifying itself for the day when the less-responsible hordes formerly relegated to Medicaid descend upon a better fscility thanks to socialized medicine.

The battle plan begins with their own employees; Smoking by employees, even when off-duty, is banned. Tests for nicotene in the system are available, and will be used for enforcement in selected cases. Employees have access to exercise plans amd facilities, but only those pre-approved. One wonders when, and if, the intrusion can be extended to broader-based factors like eating habits.

Preventive care is, of course, encouraged, but it is not that easy to obtain. I have a physical scheduled with my "new" Primary Physician (the old one retired) but not for three months, and some people are wating as long as six; I'm overdue for a Prostate-Specific Antbody (PSA), and some bloodwork, but if I want to hedge my bets, that's my responsibility.

My point is simply this: The unrealistic expectations peddled to the Great Unwashed and the Great Unthinking by the proponents of nationalized medicine have a hidden cost, and it's going to be borne by those who previously had the foresight to take care of themselves.

We hear occasional warnings about health care being "rationed"; it is already rationed via the guidelines set up by HMO's, etc, but the game is about to get much rougher. The best defense for the forward-tinking individual remains; Know yourself, know your own health history, and be prepared to provide your own discpline. Because when you need care, you're more likely to find a long line in front of you, and some of them wll have gotten there largely due to their own stupifity. It's not that the medical profession doesn't care ... it's just that a hospital is not run, and can't be run like McDonald's.

Thank you for your cogent and rational post. It is obvious that there is much to be learned here, at many levels.

No doubt it will be lost on millions of unwashed ears, and scoffed at by so many with unwashed brains.

Nevertheless, your OP is outstanding.

Oh yes, because we know how unhealthy the Japanese and Swedes are with their "socialist" health care systems.

Hope that health care network in Japan can handle nuclear melt downs.

This concept is foreign to Democrats and Liberals. "Personal Responsibility" is not in their vocabulary. This train has already left the station. The only recourse left is for the Supreme Court to strike down the individual mandate and/or a GOP supermajority to defund it.

The SCOTUS better strike it then because no matter what the GOP does, and no matter with what majority they can amase, Obama will fund it. He'll transfer funds from DOD if necessary, but he WILL fund it as long as there is money appropriate for some program or purpose, he will divert as required to "steal" the America Health Care "system". It is the mandatory first step. It is the first jack-boot on the first throat.

No, it's way too long. Plenty of people, like myself, wont' bother reading something that should be shorter.

Americans who are imprisoned undeniably have the right to health care when they get sick. Why can't law abiding, hard working people, some who may not make enough money for health care, get it without the threat of bankruptcy?
