The U.S. was involved in a war and spent a lot of money. Had there been no income tax, the U.S. would probably still been involved in WWI. The only difference would have been the debt would have been higher due to lack of an income tax to partially off-set war costs.

actually, according to our founding documents, congress already had the authority to tax the people. the 16th Amendment was never needed. all the 16th Amendment does, is it allows the goverment to tax the people with no representation at all.

Remember what happened when the Federal government put an excise tax (that was effectively an income tax) on whiskey in 1792? George Washington had to use the US Army to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion. The whiskey tax is still being ignored is some parts of the country.

Can we conclude that the OP's assertion has been thoroughly debunked?

Unrelated to this thread is that we currently spend as much on defense as during WWII, in real (2005) dollars.

Epic fail for comparing the economic situation now with one 100 years ago.

It is like comparing the Red Barons biplane to whatever the heck they have flying over in the secret test airbases in Nevada.

How did you know about that? Officially, it's a weather balloon.

More proof that spending is the problem, not revenue.
Sorry, but the income tax does not increase the national debt, sorry. Correlation is not causation.

IIRC they are testing the F-35 Boondoggle. A billion dollar flightless airplane with components made with cost plus contracts in every Congressional District. This may be the most successful military aircraft to date as it will never have to fly into combat but can just sit safely on the ground and launch missiles and bad JuJu at the enemy.

LOL! I grew up in Whiskey Rebellion country!

FWIW, most state goverments do have to balance their budgets annually. At least Colorado does. They can incur debt, though. It's like a householder who has a mortgage, but has to bring in enough money to pay it.

Count me among those who thinks it's nuts to compare the economic situation of today with that of 100 years ago!

More tax revenue just encourages the government to spend more money. The government is like a college student with a credit card, at some point you have to cut them off.

So then, the war debt should have been the focus of the "income tax" receipts and should have ended once that debt was paid....right?
