I'm dang happy that he put himself on the spot in support of this type of marriage! He will be losing more votes than he gains from the gay community. I know some Texas Democrats and Bostonian Blacks that voted him in the first time that are going to be quite disgusted by the way he made history this time.
I don't doubt the generalities of history you stated, just your belief that this country is somehow going to make an about face and validate your opposition to marriage equality.

If supporting same-sex marriage makes one gay, you can up that 5-10% estimate (of total gay population) to around 54%. So now they - and apparently I - am no longer in the minority, and the religious right often claims "majority rules." Sweet!

Judging by the outpouring of contributions (to Obama's campaign) since this declaration, he'll be gaining as many votes as he loses - if not more. I think this will only help his case, but I guess we'll see in November.
