"Known as the "personal lifestyle statement," around 50 members of the faculty and staff at Shorter University based in Rome, Ga., have chosen to resign rather than renew their contracts at the private school."

"Dr. J. Robert White, executive director of the Georgia Baptist Convention, which Shorter is a part of, told The Christian Post that the "lifestyle statement" is consistent with the convention's position."

"We have not taken a specific position related to the 'lifestyle statement,'" said White, "but the history of our convention, which goes back to 1822, has approved many resolutions regarding homosexuality as a sin and alcohol use as ill-advised."

"I do not believe there will be any changes in the 'lifestyle statement' due to people who are opposed to it," said White. "I think that at any educational institution the faculty and the administration are responsible for following the guidelines set by the board of trustees who provide this whole governance for the university."

Faculty Refuse to Sign 'Lifestyle Statement,' Resign From Christian University

Good for them. This is a private university and they have the right and responsibility to hire staff who practice what they preach. This is not a hospital denying treatment. If these people don't like the rules, there are other jobs out there. More churches and religious organizations need to adhere to their own principles, which people should make themselves aware of prior to applying for admission or a job.

It would appear that Shorter University is a little short-staffed at the moment.

LOL! Yes. It will be interesting to see how quickly/easily these positions can be filled.

So basically, an employer decided that they wanted control over the personal lives of their staff and instead of dealing with such an intrusive demand, many people quit.

Now, I do question whether or not an employer is even allowed to make such requests/demands of their staff regarding their lives outside of the workplace. But that is something I would have to research at a different time.
It is a private Christian University. I assume those attending are expecting a Christian Education provided by those who uphold their principles. Legally, a case was just won by a Christian School in which it was decided that a religious school could expect its teachers to uphold their religious principles because they "minister" to the students. I don't remember the name of the case. But it was a biggie. Anyhow, like I said, this wasn't a hospital denying treatment and it wasn't even a public school. These people are free to find employment elsewhere.

And just as the school is free to decide that they want to intrude upon the personal lives of their staff, the staff can decide that it's a stupid notion and find employment elsewhere.

No big deal.

I wonder what the qualifications are for being on the faculty of Shorter University - besides the personal lifestyle stuff? Seems like they may have to take any graduate assistant they can find who will stay away from alcohol.

Answered my own question - they require a masters degree. http://www.shorter.edu/about/hr_employment.htm

When in Rome, GA - do as the Romans do.

All this does is guarantee a school full of liars. Everyone knows it but nobody cares. It's why Christianity and most other religions are completely irrelevant now.

What a fascist freedom hating organization. I applaud the grand people who refused to bow to these morons and sign their insanely stupid lifestyle statement. Imagine the childish minds that came together to develop the lifestyle statement, no doubt the authors were in a room filled with homosexual prostitutes and crack cocaine while the writing was occurring.
The people who left need to band together now and work to bring this evil institution of utter madness down. The fascists are on the way out.
